Maloney & Porcelli

Known for generous portions of whimsical American food, this friendly, comfortable restaurant (named for the owner's lawyers) is ideal when you're dining with a hungry crowd of people (especially men) who can't agree on a restaurant. The definitive dish is a huge, juicy crackling pork shank served on a bed of poppy-seed sauerkraut with a Mason jar of tangy, homemade "Firecracker" jalapeño-spiced apple sauce. The drunken doughnuts, served warm with three small pots of liqueur-flavored jam, are one of the fun desserts. The inventive wine list includes 40 wines priced under $40. A large, square bar centers the bi-level space. Reservations essential. Jacket required. Subway: 6 to 51st St.-Lexington Ave.
