Toraya

A traditional and serene Japanese tearoom, Toraya is tucked into a row of town houses off 5th Avenue. Along with green tea, you can try some of the seasonal wagashi, a sweet bean-paste cake often shaped like flowers or leaves. A lunch menu includes such creative items as a salad of shiitake mushrooms, bacon, and mochi (lightly fried rice cakes), and a smoked turkey sandwich with miso and wasabi mayonnaise. Takeout is also available. Subway: 6 to 68th St./Hunter College.
