Spitalfields

Around the market area, crafts-and-design shops have sprung up with trendy bars and restaurants. The old 3-acre indoor fruit market, near Petticoat Lane, is reminiscent of a more chic Camden Lock Market, with food, crafts, and clothes stalls. On Sunday the place really comes alive, with stalls selling beautiful paper lamp shades, antique clothing, handmade rugs, soap filled with flowers and fruits, homemade cakes, Portuguese deli foods, and cookware. In the center, racks of easels are filled with the cheapest (around £10) original artwork from the Alternative Art Market. For refreshment it's possible to eat from West to East, with Spanish tapas or Thai among the bars and food stalls. Tube: Liverpool St., Aldgate, or Aldgate E.
