Portobello Market

London's most famous market still wins the prize for the all-round best. It sits in a most lively and multicultural part of town; the 1,500-odd antiques dealers don't rip you off (although you should haggle where you can); and it stretches over a mile, changing character completely as it goes. The top end (Notting Hill Gate) is antiquesland and more tourist-bound; the middle is where locals buy fruit and vegetables and hang out in trendy restaurants; the section under the elevated highway called the Westway has the best flea market in town; and then it tails off into a giant rummage sale among record stores, vintage-clothing boutiques, and art galleries. The bargains can be found here in Golborne Road (W10) at the Ladbroke Grove end of Portobello. For original French country furniture and other pretty pieces, the market is hard to beat. For refreshment, pop into one of the many Portuguese patisseries and cafés. The western section of Portobello around the Westbourne Grove end is also worthy of exploration. Tube: Bus 52 or Tube to Ladbroke Grove or Notting Hill Gate.
