Simpson's Tavern A bastion of English tradition, this back-alley chophouse was founded in 1759 and only started admitting women in 1916. It's popular with stockbrokers, who come for the traditional fare: steak-and-kidney pie, liver and bacon, chops from the grill, Simpson's salmon cakes, or the house specialty, stewed cheese (melted cheddar cheese on toast with béchamel and Worcestershire sauce). The tavern is full at lunch, so wander in early for a taste of the old City of London. Reservations not accepted. Tube: Bank.
