Honolulu Academy of Arts

The academy dates to 1927 and has an impressive permanent collection that includes Hiroshige's ukiyo-e Japanese prints, donated by James Michener; Italian Renaissance paintings; and American and European art. Six open-air courtyards provide a casual counterpart to the more formal galleries. The Luce Pavilion complex has a traveling-exhibit gallery, a Hawaiian gallery, a café, and a gift shop. The Academy Theatre screens art films. There are select Islamic-art tours offered by the academy's art center which take you to the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art, located within Duke's former Diamond Head estate, Shangri-La. Tours of this estate require reservations in advance. Guided tours of the academy are available Tuesday-Saturday at 11 AM and Sunday at 1:15 PM. Call about special exhibits, concerts, and films. COST: $7 Academy, $25 Shangri-La Islamic Art Tours.
