Universiteitsmuseum de Agnietenkapel

University Museum Agnieten Chapel. One of Amsterdam's only surviving medieval convents, this Gothic chapel was built in the 1470s. However, it has been emphasizing the secular since 1632, when it became part of the original University of Amsterdam, and thereby rates as the country's oldest lecture hall. Imagine bringing an apple to the likes of Vossius and Barlaeus, two greatly celebrated Renaissance scholars who both taught here. The grand interior solemnly sports stained-glass windows, an impressive Renaissance ceiling painting, and more than 40 paintings of humanists, including everyone's favorite, Erasmus. A renovation around 1919 saw the introduction of some elements of the Amsterdam School to its exterior. COST: Free.
