Nederlands Filmmuseum

One of the highlights of Vondelpark is the Netherlands Film Museum, which occupies an elegant 19th-century entertainment pavilion, first opened to the public in 1881 as a café. Here's you'll find on display such historic treasures as Amsterdam's first movie theater, the Cinema Parisien, replete with its 1910 Art Deco interior, a film poster collection, and public library, as well as shows every day in its two cinemas, drawing on material from all over the world as well as from its substantial archives (which include such gems as hand-tinted silent movies). On Thursday in summer, there are free outdoor screenings beginning at dusk. Even if you're not into film, check out the museum's very popular Café Vertigo, whose terrace tables offer grand views of Vondelpark. It's right near the Roemer Visscherstraat entrance. COST: Free.
