Concertgebouw

Concert Building. The Netherlands' premier and globally acclaimed concert hall has been filled since 1892 with the music of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and an endless stream of international artists. You will recognize the building at once, if not by its Viennese classicist facade then by the golden lyre at its peak. Designed by Al van Gendt to be one of Amsterdam's most sumptuous essays in the Neo-Renaissance style, it continues to charm many of its 800,000 visitors per year. Indeed, this rates as the most visited concert hall in the world. There are two concert halls in the building, the Kleine (Small) and the Grote (Large), the latter being the most acoustically perfect on the planet, according to many pundits. The entrance is through the glass extension along the side. There are no tours of the building, so you will need to buy a ticket to a concert to see beyond the broad lobby, or, if you visit on a Wednesday before 12:30, September to June, you can attend a free lunchtime concert.
