De Bijenkorf Far from the lofty heights of Harrods, akin to Bloomingdales, if not as stylish as Paris's Galleries Lafayette, De Bijenkorf is the city's best-known department store and the stomping ground of its monied middle classes. It has come far from its save-a-penny-style days and now stocks top international designer lines in interior decoration and clothing, gourmet goodies, the usual repertoire of suitcases, shoes, and appliances, and hipster choices like zebra-stripe pillows or togs by Bang on the Door. The store café has gone so upscale that even socialites lunch here, while makeup makeovers on the ground floor -- involving lots of fanfare, such as appearances by pop singers and even male models in drag -- offer surprise "theater" to tourists.
