In de Waag

The lofty, beamed interior of the historic Waag (weigh house) has been converted into a grand café and restaurant. Although the reading table houses computer terminals with free Internet access, a strict dinner lighting policy of "candles only" -- from a huge wooden candelabra, no less -- helps maintain the building's medieval majesty. The approach is heartily Burgundian with such entrées as baked fillet of salmon with braised endives and Noilly Prat sauce or tournedos of entrecôte with roasted beets, potato, puffed garlic, and veal gravy. The long wooden tables make this an ideal location for larger groups, and if you happen to belong to a party of eight, you should definitely book the spookily evocative tower room. Daytime hunger pangs are also catered to from 10 AM, when you can enjoy a sandwich, a salad, or a snack on the spacious terrace.
