Haesje Claes Groaning with pewter tankards, stained glass, leaded windows, rich historic paneling, Indonesian paisley fabriks, and betasseled Victorian lamps, this is a restaurant after any Meinherr Van Tassel's heart. With a menu to match its "Old Holland" menu, Haesje Claes -- the name comes from the lady who founded Amsterdam's orphanage in the 16th-century -- specializes in packing in busloads of tourists. But all remains happily cheerful. The food, if occasionally overpriced, is actually quite fine: in particular their pea soup and the selection of stampotten (mashed dishes that combine potato with a variety of vegetables and/or meats). On cold winter nights, many opt for the Hotchpotches (stews) of steamed beef, sausage, and bacon. Still, we give this a star basically for its Pieter de Hooch-worthy interiors.
