Wilhelmina-Dok

Getting to this former haven dock involves seafaring -- you take a fun ferry ride along the Noordzeekanaal (North Sea Canal) departing from a dock directly behind Centraal Station. Set on two levels, this cube-form, large-windowed restaurant is abuzz over the unique view back across the IJ river to Amsterdam's redeveloped docklands -- a view totally unblocked when sitting at the picnic tables put out in the summer. And the changing daily menu fits the setting: rich in fish (from soup offerings to grilled choices) yet still kid-friendly enough to serve spaghetti with scissors (blunt-nosed ones, we assume). A heavily laden dessert trolley offers to energize you for the voyage back to town. The establishment also serves sandwiches and soups during the day. Note that there is ferry service every 10 minutes to IJplein in Amsterdam-Noord from Steiger 8 (Pier 8). Turn right off the ferry, follow the banks of the canal, and you will find the restaurant in five minutes. You can also take the restaurant's own boat from Steiger 9 (Pier 9), but call in advance.
