Though thousands of buildings in Amsterdam are designated historic monuments, few like the Americain have their interiors landmarked as well. And for good reason: it's an Art Deco display of arched ceilings, stained glass, leaded-glass lamps, wall paintings, and a huge antique reading table (Mata Hari had her wedding reception here). As a hybrid restaurant-café serving everything from light snacks to full dinners, the food usually rates less "heavenly" than the interior. But the coffee and cakes are always excellent accompaniments to inhaling the singularly delicious decor. Reservations not accepted.
