Hi Scott,Sorry you feel that way.. Droppings you might have seen in the room was gecko poop, unfortunately the gecko loves our climate and they too poop. Toilet stains are from our artesian bore water and totally out of our control, however I do put blue loo in them to look little better. Our motel has recently changed hands, less than 6 months ago and in that time we have put new beds in our rooms, new linen we have also put new flooring in and we have the painter on the job now. We are waiting for other trades people to do necessary work. As far as saying the rooms are unclean I think that completely wrong, they may be a little old, but they are far from being unclean. There is insect spray in the rooms to deal with spiders, bugs, flies, mozzies etc., remember you were in the outback Queensland .Management.

There were 2 new chairs like in the photos but 3 old ones. The table was very wobbly and with kids this isn't great. The fridge was terrible and we had to throw out most of our food as it had perished. The kettle was so badly stained from the water (which can't be helped), but needed to be replaced, I wouldn't use it. The walls reminded me of the old school portables which they removed from schools due to unsafe material in the walls, so I wasn't happy my children were sleeping next to it. The staff were lovely and accommodating. But it was really dated, tired and needed updating.

Thank you Janine for your review. New owners have just taken over this month, we have been here only 2 weeks, however we are aware that there is a lot of work to be done. Refurbishment is in the works, new beds are on order. We are putting a filtration system on incoming water to try to alleviate as many of the issues due to the minerals the water contains. We hope to see you again in the future, if not only to see our new rooms.! Management

If could give less than 1 star I would. Wifi didn’t work. Visible black mould all over the bathroom roof. A clear health hazard to my son (who has a mould allergy) and pregnant wife. Beds were some of the worse I’ve seen. Tv reception was horrible plus the tv picture was damaged. Went to reception to ask for a refund as we simply couldn’t stay in a room with so much significant mould with my sons allergy. She said “it’s not mould. It’s just worn paint”. But if you want a refund you will need to contact wotif and they will need to contact us to do that. Found public wifi in town to contact Wotif. Who then contacted Matilda Hotel. To which she said “we can swap them to a different room (which was never offered at the time). At this stage we already had to book another room in town. Owner refused to refund and said “tough luck”. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE. If this was the last motel in town. I simply would not stop in Winton

Managers were excellent. The bathroom is terrible. It’s need a total refurb. The bed had roll together so we used a single as well. You heard noise and movement when your neighbours moved in their room next door. We stayed 3 nights

There were stained shower tiles and shower base. In one room there was no heating. In another room the bed lamps did not work. One lamp had no switch and the other was hanging by the wires. In one room there were 2 cups while in the other there was 1 cup and 1 plate. The roadway to the rooms was uneven and covered with water.

Hi Graham, We thank you for bringing the lamps to our attention and crockery, we have order more lamps through our electrician and have housekeeping updating the quantity of cups etc in each room. Unfortunately we have artesian bore water and this stains everything. The rooms are cleaned after each guest has checked out.

The owner/receptionist Catherine or Caroline (sorry I forgot her name), went above and beyond after Wotif/Expedia sent her an email the day before cancelling our booking. Because it was school holidays our room was quickly rebooked so there were no more family rooms left. She rang around to other hotels to try and find us a room but nothing was available. She then rang Expedia to try and find out what was going on and was told the cancellation email was sent by mistake and my booking was still valid. Then she gave me 2 double rooms next to each other (the only available option) for my family of 4 but only charged us the original price of 1 family room. As a family owned motel, she put herself out to make sure we had somewhere to stay even though the stuff up was all the fault of Wotif/Expedia and no-one else. How in the hell an email could be mistakenly sent cancelling my booking just boggles my mind. And the fact that Wotif/Expedia just didn't care and expected the individual motel to clean up their mess is even worse.

Hi Sebastian, Could you please let me know what room amenities you would like. We are a basic motel with Beds, tv, lovely new air-conditioners, tea, coffee facilities and an en-suite. We charge accordingly. Looking at your booking you paid $113 for a twin room. So please let me know what other amenities we could have provided? Especially for that price. We are not the Hilton, but we also don't charge Hilton Hotel prices. And please let me know what the customer service was lacking? We have lovely receptionist that are really lovely, so it is very upsetting when it is written otherwise with no explanation. Please contact the motel as I would be most interested to see what the problem was. If you came in after hours which I am starting to suspect then yes you would not have talked to a receptionist other than to let you know over the phone what your room number is. Some guests think we work all hours of the night, however we do have families we must take care of as well, so we cannot be here waiting in case someone needs service at 9pm or midnight. Room was filthy, we shifted the bed slightly and this revealed many months/years worth of debris. Spiders and many bugs in room. All kids itchy from the sheets. Light in room didn’t work nor did fridge light. The putrid smell from the water system lingers in the room for hours. Would never ever use this place again, simply terrible.

Hi Andy, Sorry you had such a terrible experience. Just to address the issues raised. The water comes from the great artisan basin and goes through the town water plant. When hot it lets off a sulphur smell, luckily it is lovely to drink and perfectly fine. I still have only one head and have lived here for a long time. Spiders and bugs are rampant in the outback as are kangaroos. We fumigate regularly, however unfortunately when guests leave the door open bugs just wander in, really the insects have no manners. The sheets are launders very beautifully by a large laundry and delivered to us lovely and clean, maybe those insects that snuck in made your children itchy, just a thought. Thank you for letting the world of the internet know about the light not working, it would be really nice if guests would let us know as they have a bad habit of going out an inconvenient times. When told of the situation we jump into action and rectify the problem. And I see here that the bed had some fluff under it. We do check the bed and vacuum under them, sometimes in the busy times though it is longer between vacuuming so we will certainly address this. May I ask that you go to reception and discuss your concerns so they can be taken care of. It is sad for us, who work so very hard to try to make your experience pleasant and find out on the internet about issues that could have been taken care of. Thank you

Basically a row of very old dongas disguised as a motel. Dirty uncomfortable and no wifi unless you are staying in the room next to reception which is pretty handy as there is no reception in the whole town except Telstra. Was advertised on here as “motel with pool’. There is no pool. The town pool is a stones throw away and apparently that counts as the pool. What a joke. Never again. The lady was lovely that’s the only positive.

Hi John, We have never advertised that we have a pool, we are in fact next door to the town pool and water park which is great for families. So please check your facts!!!! We have also never claimed to be 5 star brand new resort. It is an older motel which we are also working on to try to make it the best it can be, the price reflects the age of the motel, which you would know. We also cannot take credit for the town not have any other internet provider other than telstra. You would have to take that up with your internet provider. We get a lot of lovely comments said to us, and its disappointing when people are so hungry to jump on the internet to run businesses down. I just don't understand this.

Nice and comfortable in the heart of Winton. Close walk to attractions and pubs in town. However, it is an old motel lacking modern expectations. Bed lights were not working and no bulbs in place. There were no power points near the beds so had to move the bed towards powerpoints near table/desk to connect CPAP machine.

Great Motel , friendly greeting at reception and parking outside the room. Room was spacious , very comfortable queen bed and nice hot shower , just what you need at the end of a 12hr day. Walking distance to great country pubs with good meals. Would certainly stay here again.

Winton is a friendly outback Qld town that survives in a very harsh climate. This motel reflects it's location but still provides all the essentials very well. Clean and comfortable on the inside and inspite of what others say the water is just fine. Friendly hard working people live in and around this iconic outback town.

Booked this motel In October last year,paid top price so expected a refurbished room.We stayed June this year 2 of the coldest nights of the year so far.When we turned on the A/C unit it made so much noise we had to turn it off.The extra blankets were filthy!! Dead flies in the bathroom.Electrically unsafe all appliances running off 1 socket.I could go on ,just don’t stay there.

The Matilda Motel is a well priced, basic motel. We spent two nights, and did not stay in one of the refurbished rooms, however the room was clean and comfortable. Parking right outside the door, with two driveway access from parallel streets. Washing machine, drier and iron available. Two steps from the main street of Winton. I'm not sure if this is relevant to all motels in Winton or not, but we found the water was something we struggled with. It is Artisan water, but tasted and smelt like kerosene. The lady in reception very pleasant, helpful.and accommodating.

The first room was filthy, cobwebs in the bathroom, wasp nest in the room. All of these areas had spider droppings. We were moved to another room not much better but was a little cleaner. We could not connect to WI FI even though there was a distinct miss spelling in the notes we were given. We asked for the rom to be cleaned and when we came back in the afternoon our front door was open with all our gear inside and no cleaning to the room, we were then moved. All in all the two motels are under staffed and the grounds are a mess, we will not stay there again.

THERE ARE MUCH BETTER OPTIONS IN TOWN and WOULDN'T recommended Matilda Motel to anyone who is looking for cleanliness, comfort, parking spaces or hot water. Overall very unsatisfied with our accommodation and would suggest others to look elsewhere.
