"Fantastic central - but quiet location"
Very central close to Rialto bridge and St Marks square (probably 200-300 yards from either). Good air conditioning. Quiet hotel. Good buffet breakfast. We were offered a glass of bubbly and nibbles on the evening which was very pleasant. Comfortable beds. Easy and laid back atmosphere. Great staff.

"Wonderful hotel"
Great hotel. Professional, knowledgable and very helpful staff. The room was very large and quite comfortable. Breakfast was in the garden and quite delicious. You must also have dinner at the Caravelle (located in the gardens)

"Fabulous hotel on a pretty canal "
This hotel is a real gem. Located on a pretty canal, there are several really good local (reasonably priced) restaurants around the corner and the gondolas stop right outside if you want to take a romantic trip around the canals. The hotel breakfast is excellent - eat outside in the courtyard or inside. There's a buffet of cheese, meats, bread, cold eggs, croissants, fresh fruit salad, coffee, tea and juices, delicious fresh cakes - and the staff cook eggs and bacon if you wish. At any time of the day or evening, if you pop back to the hotel, there is free coffee, juices and small cakes - all free of charge and the soft drinks in the minibar including water and canned drinks are all provided free. There is also free tea and coffee and a kettle in the room. The hotel has free wi-fi. The decorations are very attractive and the hotel staff really, really helpful and friendly. I would definitely stay again.

"Fabulous Colombina Experience!"
My wife and I had never been to Venice, and wanted a comfortable and convenient place to call "home." The Colombina had gotten excellent reviews, and its location seemed perfect for us, so we reserved it and LOVED IT! The room was spacious and comfortable, and though it was not cheap, certainly was a tremendous value. We will definitely come back to Venice because we loved the city, and we will definitely stay at the Colombina!

"Beautiful location "
Selected from the Internet, we took a chance on this hotel. Turned out to be on the lagoon next to St. Mark's. Recently refurbished room overlooking the lagoon was excellent and the staff were very good. Very good value for money and we will definitely go back.

"Great location to Piazelle Roma!"
Easy to get to from Pia. Roma. I liked knowing I had quick and easy access to the airport bus in the morning. Room was smallish, but the worst features was the bed. Very uncomfortable mattress and pillows. I was only here for one night....so doable. My husband liked the hotel and said he could have stayed a couple of days. Front desk staff was very helpful. Continental breakfast in the morning....can get fresh cappuccino. Good value for money.

    Classic highlights

Even if you haven't visited Venice, you've probably already seen images of its classic highlights: gondolas on the Grand Canal, the gothic Doge's Palace, and the pigeons on St Marks Square. You can rest assured that the reality of these places is every bit as majestic as the postcard pictures make them out to be.

More than just a series of famous snapshots, however, Venice is a mesmerizing, mysterious city laced with hints of melancholy. Once a major maritime power, Venice continues to survive largely because of the tourist trade, with the number of actual residents dwindling year after year. Ever-increasing flooding wreaks havoc on architecture, while the summer's heat can make the city feel almost swamp-like. Decadent palaces stand next to decaying houses, glorious restoration next to gloomy ruin, making the city nothing short of a floating museum - but in many ways this is also its barrier to modernization.

    Mix of contrasts

This profound mix of contrasts makes Venice a fascinating destination. As it struggles to find a balance between preserving the rich cultural heritage on which it depends and carving out an identity as a still-living city in the 21st century, Venice remains one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

The reputations of the signature tourist 'musts' are well-deserved, but the discoveries you make by getting lost in Venice's winding streets and canals are equally rewarding. Exploring your extraordinary surroundings is sure to make you sigh in disbelief. One of Venice's most famous bridges, in fact - just one of over 400 bridges connecting Venice's islands - is called the Bridge of Sighs.

    Artists' inspiration

Even the light in Venice is different; the reflection off the water has provided inspiration for many artists. The Accademia Gallery holds several Venetian masterpieces, and you'll notice the play of light in many of its painting. The unusual light is far from being the city's only special quality. Visit during Carnevale and you'll see a glamour you thought no longer existed. Also well worth a visit is Venice Biennale, Europe's classiest international forum for contemporary art.

Cars aren't allowed in Venice, so you'll get to know the city by walking or riding vaporetti (public water buses - an alternative to the more expensive water taxis or gondolas, although it's worth splashing for a romantic evening out). Venice is notoriously crowded (and expensive), but people come for good reason. There is no other city like it in the world - its culture and canals, basilicas and bridges continue to leave visitors marveling. Despite its uncertain future, Venice hasn't lost its magic. Hide
