“San Se”

“Hotel up a steep hill, far from the beach and town center.”
I wish my Spanish were better and then the hotel staff would probably have been more friendly to me as a guest. In San Sebastian most all speak Spanish, Basque and French fluently but there is not much room for English as a 4th or 5th language. I loved the long 3 km walks to town and beach since I needed the exercise. Fitness rm. sadly had outdated and broken equipment. The swimming pool was closed. I had to take a costly taxi to the San Sebastian airport since no buses were available at 6 A.M. The volcanic ash did not cancel my transatlantic flight to Madrid but the flight from there to San Sebastian was cancelled and there was pandamonium at the Madrid airport. Iberia Air/Nostrum promised a bus to replace the flight but after 4+ hrs. reneged. I then set out by subway w. heavy luggage to learn all trains and then all buses were full. Finally I got a place on a midnight bus and arrived 6 hrs. later, totally exhausted. Iberia would not even grant a fare refund and I absorbed all extra costs myself. Even the travel insurance refused to cover any costs assoc. w. the flight cancellation.
“Not impressed”
Avenida Hotel is up in a hill, which you had to walk down to catch the frequent buses that go to downtown. There is one bus stop close by its only passes by every hour or so. Could call a taxi but they are very expensive. Hotel doesn't have a restaurant, and the restaurant nearby only opens thurs thru sunday and i believe and it doesn't open until 9pm or 9:15pm in the evening, so need to make sure you get some snacks or even dinner while your in downtown before you walk up to the hotel, cause you'll go hungry that evening, thats if you not going back to downtown. The time i went to the restaurant close by, the people were not very friendly, I felt like a true outsider so i left, maybe cause i didn't look like a local person, thats all i have to say. One of the hotel receptionist was rude to me, the other one was nice, very hard working lady. They have a free breakfast buffet from 8 to 11am but it was ok. The hotel does have a nice view though sinces its up on top of the hill. I think if you can afford to pay a little more and stay somewere closer to downtown, its well worth it.
