    The Eternal City

Rome is synonymous with ancient history, and visitors will be amazed at how much of this has been preserved. Wander through the ruins of the Forum and imagine brushing shoulders with the merchants and senators going about their business, or visit the awe-inspiring Pantheon, where all of the gods of Rome were worshipped. And don’t forget the Colosseum, where bloody fights were staged and epic sea battles reconstructed thanks to the civilisation’s engineering prowess.

The Vatican City is a separate country with just over 800 inhabitants, but its influence as the centre of the Roman Catholic Church has spread around the globe. No trip to Rome would be complete without a visit to St Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museum, which houses Michelangelo’s masterpiece—the Sistine Chapel ceiling.

    Veni, vidi, vici

To get away from the crowds and see how the face of Rome has changed over the centuries, take a trip to the Basilica di San Clemente, not far from the Colosseum. On the surface, this 12th-Century church is similar to many others in Rome, but a trip below ground reveals so much more. Careful excavation has revealed a 4th-Century church below the present-day level, but even more amazing is the 1st-Century pagan temple, dedicated to the sun god, Mithras, which is found below that!

Rome is littered with monuments and attractions, and the best way to see them all is on foot. Don’t be afraid to wander off the beaten path and slip into a little church or side alley—you will find friendly people and beautiful artwork everywhere you turn. And, despite its size, the metro system makes Rome easy to navigate, so no matter where your Rome hotel is, you’ll never be far from the action.
