Richards Bay started as a makeshift harbor established by Sir Frederick Richards, a Commodore of the Cape during the Anglo-Boer War.

Visit the Boardwalk Inkwazi Shopping Centre, home to fashions stores, restaurants and entertainment, including a cinema and go-kart track.

The town is part of the Zululand Birding Route, a series of scenic forests, mangroves, mudflats and wetlands that form a natural habitat for myriad birdlife.
