Spanning some 3-9 kms (2-5.5 miles) from Adelaide city centre, the northern suburbs are predominantly residential. As the preferred address for early Adelaide, the area immediately north of the Torrens River (up to and including middle- and upper-class Prospect) is graced with well-preserved Victorian and Edwardian architecture featuring bluestone, sandstone, and lace ironwork. The wide boulevards of OConnell and Melbourne streets are a hub of restaurants, cafes, bistros, bars, specialty shops, galleries, and boutiques. Other local attractions include: Adelaide Aquatic Centre (indoor heated pool complex); North Adelaide Golf Links; Adelaide Oval (for cricket and Australian Rules Football); Prospect Oval (home of the North Adelaide Australian Rules Football Club); and 14 heritage-listed pubs and hotels. The more northerly suburbs of Enfield and Kilburn comprise some new housing estates.
