The National Gallery of Canada holds an impressive collection of national and international artworks from a range of significant historical periods. More than 30,000 works of art are housed in its collection, which gives insight into Canada’s artistic legacy. See historic First Peoples’ carvings and works by Canada’s leading contemporary artists.
Walk through the airy Colonnade to the Great Hall. Tall windows offer commanding views of Parliament Hill and the Ottawa River. The building is 43 metres (141 feet) tall. Its modern architecture is a tribute to Parliament Library and its Victorian Gothic Revival style.
See Canadian paintings and artifacts from the 18th century in one of the galleries. Indigenous exhibitions feature Inuit stone carvings and traditional totem poles. Sculptures that date back as far as the second century are dotted throughout the gallery. A European collection displays artworks by 17th-century masters Rubens and Van Dyke, among others, while another collection features 15th-century religious drawings. The contemporary art galleries house exciting installation and video artworks.
The National Gallery is a work of art itself, featuring stunning design. The building is made of glass and granite and its angular towers represent Ottawa’s position as Canada’s capital city. Visit the Taiga Garden to see landscaping inspired by the painting Terre Sauvage by A. Y. Jackson. He was a member of the Group of Seven, the famous collective of Canadian artists whose works broke away from European traditions and formed their own distinctive Canadian style.
Have lunch at the museum’s café or dine at the glass-topped restaurant looking out to Ottawa River. Stop by the gift shop on your way out to peruse the museum’s selection of Canadian art books.

The National Gallery of Canada is located on the Ottawa River, just north of Parliament Hill. Come on foot or by bike from Château Laurier and the ByWard Market. Parking is available for a fee.
