“Needs significnt experience”
Whilst the rooms and the hotel amenities are of high quality my overall experience of this hotel was decidedly average. Checked in early as had to go directly to work. Getting back after a long day I couldn't find my bag. On ringing reception they located and brought directly up - after a long day not what I really wanted to deal with. However quaint Melbourne laneways may be they are also the home to after hours brawls and garbage distribution. The fights, drunken rantings and bottle smashing started at 2.30am and just kept coming. There is an obvious need for better sound proofing. On checking out I voiced my concerns to the reception who noted they would tell management. I would not recommend staying here on a Thursday to Saturday night.
“80% impressed”
Check-in and staff were excellent, great central location and within walking distance of a lot of attractions. However, I didnt see a great deal of value. My only gripe would be the cleanliness of the room, most notably in two areas: shower (tiles needed a good scrub and bleach) and the doona cover was another issue altogether. The bed spread consisted of a plain old doona with a simple cover sheet (possible bed sheet) which is sufficient, however, the dark stains resembling blood were another issue. After the first night I even left the stains so they would be clear to cleaning staff, but the bed was simply remade. In the end i switch the 'dirty' end to the base of the bed. I would have expected a lot better from a 4.5 star hotel and if I had been paying for it out of my own hip pocket, I would have notified staff to ahve the issue resolved(versus business trip). All in all OK, but I was sadly much more impressed with my budget accommodation at the Best Western Atlantis the two days prior. I'd say simplicity and cleanliness wins over style and ego every time.
“Would love to go back”
The Sebel Hotel in Melbourne was brilliant. The room was comfortable. The service of the staff was outstanding especially Davina and Gordon. They were very helpful to us and made us feel at home. The hotel was in easy walking distant to most things in the city area.
“Great room and service”
We arrived at the Sebel at 9 am expecting to store luggage and were admitted straight to the room and it was bigger and more comfortable than we expected; an excellent start! The room had lots of opening windows and the beds were great! The desk staff were friendly, knowledgeable and efficient. We didn't eat in the hotel so can't comment on breakfast but there are many places within easy walking distance, including South Bank and Victoria Markets. Despite the very central location with a tram stop outside the door, the rooms are quiet and the neighbourhood safe. It was really good even tho' we were only in Melbourne for one night.
“New Years Eve 2009”
We stayed here with our teenage boys. Beautiful hotel with old world class. Fabulous staff, especially the concierge who was there both days. I wish I had paid attention so I could name him. Without us asking we were offered maps of the fireworks for that evening and felt completely cared for the whole time we were there. Highly recommend this hotel.
“Very impressed”
Overall a very good place to stay! The staff were lovely and so helpful; the rooms spacious and immaculate. Also, a great central location.
“Excellent!”
Excellent service and very friendly staff!
“Great location”
The Sebel was in a great location where we could walk right around the city or if tired so close to the trams. The room was very big with a kitchenette and lounge area as well as the bed. Only problem was that even though we had lots of great seating the TV was only positioned to see it from the bed, so you could not watch it from the lounge - bit silly I think. The staff were very helpful as well for anything we required around the city.
“For-sure NOT a 4.5 star hotel”
Folks... There's nothing wrong with this place, but also beware - there is no-way based on any sensible measure that this place is a 4.5 star hotel. Not close. It's like a nice serviced apartment. If you are looking for real 4.5 stars you will be disappointed. Honestly - the room was closest to a Marriott Residence Inn. The common areas were unairconditioned, strangely partitioned/arranged, and deserted. And un-airconditioned. I was there for the Australian Open tennis. Good luck.
