“Pick this hotel if you only care about location”

This is not a 4 star hotel, no matter how you look at it. The rooms are old and beyond dirty, the facilities are dated, and the staff (with very few exceptions) is beyond incompetent. On the bright side, the location is great. If you are into campgrounds well located, go for this hotel. If not, swallow the pill (the bitter one that is prices in Australia) and pick the Westin a block away.

“It's all about location!”

I have stayed here a couple of times now. It offers great value for money and you cant beat the locatiion- opposite flinders st station. It is not noisy and the staff were very helpful. It is right near Degraves st- a wonderful place for breakfast. Our room this time was a little tatty- stained lamp shade and a globe in the other lamp didnt work. Another disadvantage is that the shuttle to the airport cant drop you/pick up directly outside the hotel, although it was only a short walk to their pick up point. This is a great choice and I will stay again!

“Perfect Location, Extremely Helpful Staff”

Located directly across from Flinders Street Station and just down from Federation Square, this hotel is great. Before we even arrived they had offered us an early check in (if possible), late check out and to store our luggage as we were arriving at 9am and flying out at 8pm. The City Cirlce stops in front and trams to almost anywhere are within a few blocks. The breakfast was tasty, with plenty of choice and the best scrambled eggs I have ever had on a buffet. The Concierge was knowledgable, extremely helpful and nothing was too much trouble. Would definitely recommend staying here on a visit to Melbourne!

Area recommendations
Loved Melbourne as there is something new down each street and it's so vibrant. St Kilda is also great for sights and food.
Getting around
The City Circle is great for orienting yourself and deciding where you might want to go back and spend time. The Tourist bus (both free) is perfect for going a little farther afield. You can't go wrong with the Sunday Saver as you can ride all trains, trams and buses for only $3 for the entire day.
What to pack
Always have a light jacket and a singlet just in case it gets cool. Good walking shoes and sunscreen
Dining
The Big Mouth in St Kilda has the best home made jam! Large servings of very tasty food! The Peking Duck in Chinatown is also good value and tasty food.

“Good location, Rooms looking a little worn”

Great location, walking distance from great restaurants, shopping and bars. Rooms looking a little warn, in particular bathroom, however rooms were comfortable. Certainly not worthy 4 star experience in that department. However staff agreeable enough and competent aside from housekeeping wanting to check the mini bar at 9.30 in the morning the day after our arrival.

“Excellent. Very glad I stayed here. Would happily stay again.”

I have enjoyed my stay at this hotel I stayed in a city view room and was given a room on the seventh floor. The view was stunning. Big windows looked directly out over the top of Flinders street station and to the Southbank precinct. The bed was very comfortable, bathroom was clean and perfectly satisfactory, plenty of power points for recharging cameras etc, tv fine, Internet charge was mid-range, wardrobe hanging space was fine but there were only two coat hangars (would have liked 6 or so). Staff were all efficient, polite and very helpful. One of the best things about this hotel is the location: nearby southbank arts, concerts, and pleasant easy stroll to centre of city / Collins St etc. I did not dine in the hotel. Instead I dined at many of the wonderful nearby cafes. Try Degreaves St cafes etc. So, I'd stay here again happily. The city view rooms are worth it for the view: pretty night lights and bright daytime vista. Storage of bag at check out is available. Staff will kindly hail taxi for you. Tip: if catching taxi from hotel to airport at peak hour (5pm) weekday, expect a traffic jam! Took me 1.25 hours travel time! Very happy to have stayed at this hotel. Would stay again.

“Definitely going Back with friends.”

Fantastic location for the MCG and everything else on offer in CBD of Melbourne.

Getting around
Walking is the best way around the CBD; you see so much more of the city you cannot see from the trams.

“Will use again ;-)”

We will definitely stay again. Great position, close to transport and restaurants/cafes. We ate at the surrounding restaurants, etc so we cannot comment on the hotel food. We gave mostly 5-stars for our review but for comfort and service, a 4. What would make it a 5 for us? The same attention to kids comfort as adults receive. Our 10yr old son was with us and his bed was the fold up kind with one of those mattresses that you feel almost all of the springs in your back (our son is around 30kg), so a proper mattress will be good. Also, room service replaced our towels and not our son's. We had to chase that. Kids or extra guests seem to be bit of an after thought. These were small issues though, overall we really enjoyed the stay.

Getting there
One small tip regarding the shuttle services to the hotel. Melbourne Airport has 2 levels where pickups occur, our service didn't mention this. So check which level the pick up zone is on. It seems that most pick up areas are on the ground level though. Takes 20-30 mins to Citigate Melbourne hotel.
Dining
If visiting Lygon street for dinner, you'll most likely be haggled by the restauranteurs to dine with them as you walk past. There's a lot of competition there. They'll offer free drinks, free kids meals, etc. We found the most effective way to stop the haggle is to just say you've already had dinner, it stops them in their tracks ;-)
Events and shows
Recommend checking out the Melbourne Museum. We visited the King Tut. exhibition. Really enjoyed. Exhibit Tip: Save yourself time and line position, no video/still cameras and backpacks allowed. There are free lockers in the canteen area next to the exhibit.

“Our Citigate experience”

We arrived early in the morning after leaving Perth late the previous night. The hotel staff were welcoming and organised an early check in for us. We'd previously requested this via email and they'd responded that they would check us in early if the room was available. We really appreciated being able to get a few hours sleep before setting off to explore Melbourne. The location of this hotel was perfect for our plans. We were able to see so much from our hotel room window and everything we wanted to do was within walking distance. The room was comfortable and well-equipped. We will definitely stay here again when we come back to Melbourne.

“Our Best Stay Yet!”

We have been to Melbourne many times and stayed at different hotels. Citigate Flinders Street is by far the best one yet. It is a great location and easy walking distance to most places of interest. Trams are just at the doorstep. The only thing you should be aware of is if you use the Skybus transport from airport to your hotel, their bus does not drop off directly out the front of this hotel due to a traffice issue, however you will be dropped off and collected from just around the corner and this is not a problem. Our room was a waterview room, great view, clean and very roomy. Th staff were very pleasant and extremely helpful. We will be staying here again on our next trip to Melbourne.

Area recommendations
Melbourne is a very vibrant and beautiful city. The CBD area has a lot to offer, theatres, museums, galleries, restaurants etc. St. Kilda is always a great visit especially on a Sunday to enjoy the markets and great restaurants for lunch. Toorak is also a good place to go for lunch or dinner. Bridge Road is a shoppers paradise with lots of seconds shops for those who want to shop. Also a visit to the Queen VIctoria Markets is a must. These are best visited on Sunday but also open on a Saturday. Melbourne's Crown Casino is also good to visit and take in their many venues within this massive complex.
