“enjoyed the stay”
Near the metra station. didn't use it too much. Spent most of the time walking to see the sites. Didn't travel outside the city. When I did use the metra it was simple to use and cheep.
“Great location to see Madrid”
The hotel itself is a bit dated and could use some updating. However, the staff was wonderful and the rooms were very clean. We had two rooms - my husband and I in one and our two adult sons in the other. The location of the hotel was the most important to us and it was great! Just steps from the metro and easy walking distance from restaurants and bars. We felt very safe venturing out day or night. We had a great time and would stay here again.
“Room not good”
We were there for 2 days. We were given the worst room on the floor (wall was peeling, bathroom was too small to move. The room was smallest and corner most on the floor The beds were uncomfortable. Got up with a back pain. The view from room was facing some small street and we were told that they were full, while we saw customers checking in after us.) I am saying that it was the worst room because, after requesting and pleading that our stay was 2 days, they gave us a good room the next day. The front office staff was not friendly and we felt discriminated. This was the only hotel where we felt this on our entire trip in Spain, Portugal and Netherlands. We checked in an other hotel on the 3rd day. That hotel was good and we were happy to end our trip in this hotel. The only thing good about the Tryp Rex hotel was the location and i guess, that would be the only reason to stay there. But then there are tons of hotels on Gran Via.
“The best location”
This hotel location is excellent. Everything is a walking distance. Breakfast is abundant and of very good quality. Bathrooms are just updated. Excellent service.
“Needs a facelift”
Tryp Rex is right in the middle of the action - walking distance from both the Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol. But it is badly in need of a facelift. The walls look dirty, the carpet is worn, all the wood-work is scuffed and the bathroom ceiling seemed to have water damage. It seemed that they cleaned as well as they could, but overall the hotel needs repairs. However, the price was very reasonable for the location and included a generous continental breakfast. Access to the Metro is across the street, and the staff was helpful. If cosmetic details don't bother you, this place might be a good choice.
“Will go back!”
Great hotel close to everything via Callao Metro and walking distace to Sol, Royal Palace, Asturias. Friendly staff willing to help. Only problem is double bed is two twins pushed together, make sure to ask for "cama matrimonial" to get a standard American double bed. Elevators are very European, small, so be forewarned. Otherwise very clean, comfortable, and close to all sights. I know when we come to Madrid again we will stay here.
“Hotel is in good location. However, needs major renovations.”
Don't expect much. It's an old hotel, but in a good location. Front doors are locked late evening, early morning. It's a hassle. You have to ring door bell. Someone, who is never happy about it, has to walk up the step to let you in. Elevators are small, expect to wait if you get behind a large group.

Gran Via - Puerta Del Sol, Madrid, Spain: Musicals, hotels, shops and restaurants make the Gran Via a rich vein of entertainment, finishing in the east with the black dome of the Metropolis building. The heart of Madrid, the Puerta del Sol contains the statue of the symbolic bear of Madrid and Tio Pepe sherry sign. Westwards, the grand Plaza Mayor was once the site of inquisitions and executions, but is now mostly visited for its terrace cafes.
