“Great Hotel”

Without exception, the staff was very professional, attentive, and eager to please. Our room was exceptionally clean, has a free laundry room (we'd recommend that you buy your detergent from one of the nearby convenience stores rather than from the vending machine in the hotel), and a decent gym and sauna. The hotel's location was also very convenient; it's located within walking distance of several major attractions including the London Eye, Big Ben/Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, and Trafalgar Square. Waterloo Station is about a 10 minute walk away and there are several restaurants. convenience stores. and cash machines located nearby. Some negatives that we don't feel detract from the overall desirability of the hotel follow. Our room was advertised as having a "kitchenette", but by U.S. standards this was definitely not the case. The room actually had a microwave, a small refrigerator (the actual usable space of which was made even smaller by the fact that the hotel stocked over half of it with stuff you had to pay for), some plates/eating utensils, and a coffee maker. It was impractical to use for preparing anything other than small snacks which was disappointing. Our room was a good size but had only one chair for sitting so much of the space was wasted. It was very difficult to adjust the room temperature to a comfortable setting. Finally while the bath/tub was visually appealing, it was a difficult to get in and out of because of its height.

Area recommendations
While there is plenty to do and see with Central London, if you have the chance check out Windsor and Windsor Castle and/or Greenwich. Both areas are very scenic and have a quieter, more rustic feel. Also take some time to stroll through at least one of the city's major parks.
Getting around
Strongly consider purchasing either an Oyster card or a London Pass with Travelcard. Either option greatly simplifies tube, train, and bus travel and could give you considerable savings.

“Fabulous”

I enjoyed this hotel very much. The previous week I stayed across the road at Park Plaza Westminster Bridge and for my next stay in London I will find it difficult to decide which Park Plaza to choose from. Park Plaza Country Hall was certainly worth the money.

“Loved Park Plaza County Hall! Quiet, Super Clean, Nice Staff, Good Location, slept well.”

This was a family trip - me, my husband and 10 and 14 year old. The room was clean, so quiet - never heard our neighbors, close to waterloo, beautiful view of London eye & Big Ben, Free breakfast every morning, Free Ice cream vouchers for the kids and a goody bag. The staff was friendly - helped us find free ATM's, movie theatre, explained about tipping in London. ( you would probably need to ask for the view - not every room would have a view like we did) I am a clean freak and for me to say it was a clean room is big. We will definitely return. Loved London and it was wonderful having a great hotel.

Area recommendations
We loved taking a river boat from the London Zoo to Camden for only 4 pounds for adults and less for the kids. It was a neat experience and it lets you out at a wonderful food market, fun atmosphere, typical pubs. Camden is like going to SoHo in New York or to a college town - very hip and bargains can be found there for souvenirs.
Getting around
Used the underground - got an oyster card from heathrow airport and took the underground to our hotel. You will need to refill your oyster card if you use it a lot. YOu can do that via kiosk - with pound bills (no coins) or credit card. My son is 10 so he was free and did not need an oyster card. He would have to go with me thru the handicap/child stroller gate and with one swipe of my card then we both went thru the gate together. We did ride the double decker bus for fun one day - it was fun! They use the oyster card too. When sitting on the top there are buttons that you push to let the driver know below that you need off at the next stop. Took Train to Paris and it was easy to do - Metro subway was very difficult to understand and use unlike London's underground.
What to pack
Went in Mid July - must pack sweater or jacket and umbrella. It rained all 6 days but 1 - but it isn't a big rain, just mist and normally is gone in 3 to 4 minutes. Then the sun would reappear and then disappear. Not like our huge rain showers in Oklahoma. Very doable and still go on tours and walk around town. Wear your tennis shoes - you will walk miles everyday. My teen daughter tried to be fashionable in her footwear and had huge hurtful blisters. She finally wore tennis shoes for the rest of the trip - Converse.

“Great Hotel”

The Park Plaza County Hall was the perfect hotel for our first trip to London. It is walking distance to the London Eye, Queen's Walk, Westminster Bridge, Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, Parliment and very close either the Waterloo or Westminster underground stops. If you plan to visit all of these landmarks during your stay, this is a great hotel. Rooms were modern, clean, nice but not spacious (but it is Europe after all). Staff was friendly and helpful. Elevators were a bit slow at peak times. Breakast buffet was good but expensive, but there were plenty of cafes close by. We enjoyed the hotel and would stay again.

“Great location”

This hotel is located in an area that gets quiet and empty at night, so there is no noise, but yet is very close to everything: a major station (Waterloo around the corner), bus tours (Big Bus and others), a lot of good restaurant (south bank), the Eye ferris wheel (one block away), a few coffee shops for breakfast, and two bridges across the river. You get cabs very easily and quickly, the concierge was great and helpful. Big Ben is right across the river, and it's only a 20 minute walk up to the major tourism areas of SoHo, Picadilly Circus, Oxford Street etc. The neighborhood to the south is nice and also has some good places to eat, stores to buy affordable food and other basic stuff. Very convenient, also clean and with nice staff. We didn't eat there, so have no idea about the food.

Area recommendations
We were not lucky with the weather, it rains on most days, although not all day. Buckingham Palace is only open Aug-Sept, worth noting. We were not impressed with the shopping (we're from NY), but Portobello Road (fab antiques and vintage) and Camden Market were fun.
Getting around
London is safe and clean. Traffic is hectic, cabs expensive, but we heard the subways get crowded and slow, so with a stroller, cabs were the best option. Everything closes early (4-6), so you have to choose to either shop or sightsee, hard to have time for both.
What to pack
Forget shorts & sandals, you need a jacket and umbrellas/ponchos. Dress in layers, like in Northern California, similar climate. Rain comes and goes very suddenly, but it can be warm and sunny too. Nights are cold.
Dining
The best restaurants are in SoHo, we found. It's a tourist area, but not as bad as around the squares, and the eateries are smaller, more affordable and mostly good. Notting Hill and Camden also had small, mom&pop eateries that were diamonds in the rough if you like various cuisines. Stay away from areas around Regent & Oxford Streets. South Bank has nice restaurants and bars along the river. Pubs and restaurants close at around 11 pm.
Family-friendly activities
There are plenty of parks for kids, but it rains a lot. London is not the best place for little kids or strollers, it gets crowded and tight. Thank god we had an iphone so our little one could play games on it. She would have been bored.

“Great stay at the Park Plaza”

We loved our stay at the Park Plaza County Hall. The location was brilliant and was within easy walking distance of many of the key attractions. Would recommend the hotel to anyone and would definitely stay there again on our next trip to London.

“Perfect for solo traveler”

I am grateful to the friend who recommended this hotel service, and as luck would have it I found the one with easy access to numerous major attractions. The room comes with all the benefits i expect in the US - hot water, hair dryer, iron, internet, and tv, plus comes with a friedge and microwave, giving me the opportunity of keeping a few things in the room. Check-in and check out are later than I've seen in the US, which I like, but did not expect. A 2pm check-in threw me off and I ended up on foot with luggage since leaving home nearly 24 hours. However, I was able to check in my bags to concierge reducing my load a bit. Staff was very friendly and very helpful. A US-UK converter was provided upon my asking where to pick one up. The lobby offers a hand-held charging service for a variety of models. This was exceptionally helpful, not having checked in yet.

Area recommendations
I took national rail from London down to Brighton and Brighton Beach for the day - what a great display of a European village with seaside town. There was so much to see and do - many cuisines, street performers including a mime and a living statue.
Getting around
While there is a great subway service avialable (London Underground), I spent the first tay taking taxis. The cabs are different from US taxis in that the passenger area is open with room for up to 4 people to sit, but with open floor space, there was tons of room for luggage, as well as easy exit and entrance to the cab. Taxi drivers do not help you with your bags and do not expect tips as yet. (Though I am told the excessive tipping of the US is working its way into the UK.) One driver seems to have driven down a one day street the wrong way after crossing a cobbled walk area, and told me there were embedded cameras and that he was now expecting a moving violation to arrive in the mail. The cabs were narrow with a tight turning radius, and all were able to easily navigate the narrow lanes. Overall it was a great way to get to the train and hotel quickly and easily while experiecing driving on the opposite side of the road safely.

“Good base hotel for tourists to London”

Short 5 minute walk from Westminster Bridge, London Eye, etc, and convenient to two underground stops (Waterloo, Westminster), this hotel serves as a good base for tourist exploration. Additional benefits that we found to be particularly useful were free very-fast WiFi (great for uploading pictures each night for backup) and free guest laundry machines on site (although you have to buy detergent from the neighborhood store -- provided this feedback to the hotel and have been advised they are working on getting some available within the hotel). We stayed in a standard room. It wasn't too large, but was easily large enough to unpack and spread out a little without feeling overly cramped. Ironing board/iron and plenty of extra plugs, a rarity in most hotel rooms, were also convenient. The rooms and hotel common areas were well kept and clean. The immediate area around the hotel is not the nicest neighborhood, but in no way feels dangerous as the streets are pretty busy even late at night. Thick double-paned glass kept the noise out, even construction being done on an adjacent building.

Getting there
Getting to this hotel from LHR is easy. Take the dark blue picadilly line, transfer at one of three different stations to three different lines to get to Waterloo terminal.
Getting around
Oyster cards are a must for visiting London. Take full advantage of the tube and spare your feet.
