“Got a noise room”
Got a noise room / Internet is not included and complementary
“Russell Hotel -overpriced for quality and service”
We selected this Hotel since we had stayed here over 10 years ago. We had heard that they had made renovations so we decided to give it a try. The service was below par for two reasons: One one night they had a wedding party dance till midnight and we could hear the walls shake with the music. When we complained to the staff we were told nothing will be done until midnight since the party was going to end then. The management said they will "train" the desk personnel. One of the concierge was not helpful at all. He had no knowledge of the area and could not tell us about how to get to anywhere. The breakfast was nothing to write home about
“Great London location”
As London hotels go, this is reliable and well maintained. It is large with a huge marble staircase in the foyer. It was built as a hotel, rather than a series of town houses that have been linked together. There can be noise in bedrooms until midnight if there is a function in the ballroom. Its great advantage is that it is just around the corner from Russell Square tube which connects directly to the West End and Heathrow. There is a supermarket opposite the tube station, too. Wifi is free in the foyer but you have to login after each halfhour. It is within easy walk of the British Museum, Covent Garden, and bus services to other key tourist areas leave from outside the door in Russell Square.
“Good if you ask for what you paid for . . .”
This hotel is in a great location, and in the end, my room was fine. However, when I first arrived they put me in a shabby double room (NOT redecorated like the rooms shown in the Expedia photos) with grimey paint, loose carpeting and a bed that tilted toward the headboard. After spending fifteen minutes looking around in dismay, I called the front desk and said I didn't like the room, and why. They moved me immediatley to an updated room that did look like the photos. Though a vast improvement, the mattress had seen better days. And at 7 a.m., the tv spontaneously went on, loudly. I expected more from four star hotel, but have to say the location was excellent. Most (but not all) of the front desk staff members were friendly and helpful. In the end my experience was okay to good, but I would hesitate to recommend this hotel because I didn't find the service and quality of rooms to be consistent. some of the staff members were friendly and helpful.
“Much Improved Except for Food”
Much, much improved. We stayed here in the 80's and early 90's because we love the neighborhood, but increasing dirt, confusion and poor service made us move on. With new owners and much improved service it is once again our stop on Russell Square. But not the restaurant! It remains stubbornly over-priced with mediocre food. However there are many nice enough little places to eat in the neighborhood. It is a good deal on discounted rates, but not rack rates.
“Nice Hotel, Lousy Internet Access”
I just came back from my stay at the Hotel Russell and while it was pleasant I don't think I'd stay there again. The hotel itself is very nice: my husband and I actually stayed there for a few days before and after our wedding and we had one of their more contemporary rooms. It was small but comfortable (the bed was very comfortable), air-conditioned—which I know can be rare—and had a cute balcony & very large bathroom. The hotel staff were pleasant as well, though they have the slowest concierge imaginable. Now for the negatives. Their Internet service is terrible, and definitely not up to the quality of the hotel & its price range. You get 30 mins of WiFi with limited bandwidth on the lobby level only, and every 30 mins you have to log into their system again using your full home address. Other than that it's a hefty charge for ethernet service in your room—no WiFi. Since I was on a trip that required coordinating with several people this was a nightmare, though I realize some people might not care as much. As for my other major problem with the hotel, their food was really mediocre. As other travelers have commented, their breakfast is outrageously overpriced, and the continental one was barely edible (stick with a roll and tea or coffee, and don't touch their ghastly scrambled eggs). For some reason all their breads are delicious, but the only other edible food on their room service menu was chicken tikka masala. All in all, I think next time I'd stay somewhere else.
“Very nice stay!”
Excellent service, friendly staff, comfortable accomodations in a setting very handy to London sights. Underground service is right around the corner, British Museum is only a block away.
“Good, Practical, don't overpay for this one. Upgrades are negotiable”
Checked in, wanted a bigger room. They wanted 40 pounds more per night, got them down to 20 pounds more per night. Their single room is too small (don't suffer). Close to Russell Square tube station, but just walk (you'll walk the same amount in the tube sometimes). Close to British Museum. about 25 minute walk to the Embankment, 20 minute walk up the street to Camden. Hotel lacks work out facility, their Wifi sucks, go up the road to the internet cafe.
“dont judge a book by its cover”
this hotel looks great from the lobby and is a great location but its a dump. Its more like a 2 star than a 4 star. My room was so small that i upgraded to a room that was tiny. There was no wifi in room and the internet service was abyssmal for the price. It should not advertise itself as a 4 star because its nowhere near at that level.
“good”
venerable, old, ornate hotel in an ideal location forsightseeing.very clean.staff quite courteous and helpful.
