Various Chinese dynasties contributed over many centuries to the building of this inspiring 13-storey tower that rises gallantly above southern Hangzhou.

Liuhe (Six Harmonies) Pagoda is considered among the most picturesque in the whole of Hanzhou. Travellers gather outside the towering structure to gaze up at its 13 stories and capture photos of its exterior eaves, which generate patterns of light and shade around the structure.

The site sits at the foot of Yuelun Hill, where it has loomed over southern Hangzhou for several centuries. It has been reconstructed several times over the years, with its initial version crafted in A.D. 970 during the Northern Song Dynasty. Its most recent renovation occurred during the Qing Dynasty. Note the variety of architectural styles found in the octagonal building.

Climb to the top of the pagoda via the spiral staircase. Although the exterior of the building gives the appearance of having 13 stories, the inside of the structure comprises of seven. Take a break to catch your breath on each of the floors. Here, you will get a glimpse of the ornate and intricate features, such as carved ceilings with themes of animals, flowers and human figures.

Capture photographs of the picturesque scenery around the structure from within. The windows around the tower are bare, providing a perfect picture-taking environment. Take extra care with young children around the windows, as they are very high up.

Admire the views of the Qiantang River and the blue arch of the Qiantang River Bridge below from atop the pagoda. Some claim that the Liuhe Pagoda was initially constructed in the hope of calming the turbulent river waters. It was once used as a lighthouse.

After exploring the tower, make a trip to the adjacent park, where you will find many mini replicas of pagodas across the globe. Children wander around the park, feeling like giants among the model houses. See which pagodas you are able to recognise.

The Liuhe Pagoda can be found near the Qiantang River’s banks, just west of the Qiantang River Bridge. It opens every day to the public for a small admission cost. Take a bus or taxi to the site from the centre of Hangzhou.
