The building was freezing cold. The bathroom in our room was freezing cold. Cobwebs all over the ceiling. Tv remote did not work. Asked for a replacement but was ignored. Asked for a glass of water at the bar for my wife and was charged £3!!!

Four Star, maybe if I had electric!!
Comfy bed, clean enough. Woke up to no electric in my room at all. Couldn’t phone reception as the telephones are powered. Got dressed by torch and could not use any of my room facilities, told reception who already knew about a power fault and there was not a hint of a refund or gesture of good will. Unfortunately I was there on business and didn’t have the time to argue as I was already late from the pitch black fun and games.

the bed lets the room down
The room was very clean, and the shower good, but the downside was that the mattress on the bed was very worn and miles too soft.

This hotel has gone downhill over the years. The English breakfast was ok, but the closing of the kitchen for hotel guests, to service a catered event, was not acceptable, when you have no transportation and nothing within walking distance our room had no heat, they did provide a space heater, we used for 2 days. No offer to fix. Light bulbs which were never replaced. Furniture worn. Just not the special place it was in the past.

Needs updating
The staff are wonderful, with just one little niggle. The lady in charge of breakfast clears your table when you get up to get anything else. The overall cleanliness was good but the hotel desperately needs money spending on it. Rotten window frames and loose toilet roll holder was just 2 things that needed fixing in my room. The reception staff were great and for that reason I would use it again.

Don’t go – why is no hot water in rooms an issue?
Management and or staff insouciant. No hot water available all day in room, hadn't checked on arrival (a maintenance man told me there were unaffected areas of the hotel) Reception said no move possible. Instead use the nearby unconnected Health Club, who required I supply ID & full personal details (just for a shower!) In my view inappropriately, Health Club confirmed they would be adding my details to their database, not just holding for the duration of my brief visit. No recognition of risk to me of their casual acquisition of my personal data! Hotel reception said this was not the agreement, but Health Club would not change their mind. As restaurant overcrowded, we went to bar for food, having been told no TV available to watch a particular football match on TNT, Liverpool match came on, on bar TV via same channel. Service in bar appalling - Mercure's till process (seen it elsewhere too) is too long-winded for staff. 2 staff took 12 minutes to serve 3 pints! Bar then lost our food order - arrived eventually 25 mins after re-ordering 30 minutes after initial order placed and acknowledged. Room safes not working - we've turned them off - yet it claims they're a 4 * hotel Bed was comfortable, room clean and spacious, air con worked effectively (albeit continuous hum). Shower worked well when water available (last morning) but low - only neck high if you're over 5 foot Seems hotel prioritises conferences not bothered about those who self finance.

Only a one night stay to attend a Wedding. The staff were all welcoming and informative. The room was clean and well appointed. The breakfast choice was excellent. The hotel is looking a little tired decoration wise in the 'common areas'. A real value for money hotel, its not five star but then I didn't pay a five star price and so shouldn't expect it.

Needs modernisation & attention
On arrival the receptionist was telling us logistics, someone was speaking loudly on the phone right beside her so we couldn’t hear. Our room was stifling (hottest day of the year), there was air con but not working - we phoned down but no one attended, went to reception was given a remote, but the air con had been decommissioned. We opened the window but were invaded by wasps, there was a bush directly outside & there were hundreds of them. The bed was so uncomfortable we slept on top with no covers. We were there to attend a family party locally. When we returned sometime after midnight the front doors were wide open, but there was not a sole on reception or anywhere else. All night long we could hear people returning to their rooms & the floors creaked. It’s understandably an older building but this was ridiculous. We had stayed at the hotel for a family wedding before & had none of these issues. The hotel has been allowed to go downhill, we imagine due to the results of the pandemic, but it really isn’t fit for purpose & to charge us £112 for just one night in room 6 was daylight robbery - never again!

Ok but plenty of areas of improvement
Cons Creaky floor boards in rooms, limited number of waiting staff in the bar & restaurant, 1 million fire doors to get through if you're carrying a lot and quite slow internet in the evening Pros Very clean room, good useable lift to the 3rd floor, nice adjacent gym & pool + good and friendly staff

If you like a weekend with loud bar / lounge music with a lot of bass shaking your room until 11:00pm, then this is your place. Terrible. Could not get a good rest because of this extremely noisy place on Friday and Saturday nights.

Great staff, but hotel needs a refresh!
The staff were mostly excellent, but I was amazed to hear that tips aren’t paid to the staff concerned, at least in the bar. If that’s accurate it should change. Check in was efficient, informative and friendly. Bar prices for soft drinks are a disgrace (£2.75 for a tiny 200ml coke made it more expensive than the premium beers!!) The building looks tired and in need of a refresh throughout. I realise the industry is still in recovery, but basic things like holes in rotten window frames and cleaning windows (so that there aren’t weeks old spiders webs) really give a bad impression.

The hotel is based in a beautiful location with nice grounds. The hotel is out dated, the evening food is flavourless and the breakfast room reeks of old fat and cooking smell.
