never had such a bad experience checking in, the girl (with glasses) at the reception was so rude it was laughable, I really got no idea how she got the job. the hotel is really nice and close to everything, but the rooms facing the main street get really noisy at night, the it gets quiet from 11 pm until 4am when the traffic (trucks, buses ect..) start again. ok for the location , the beauty of the hotel, the swimming pool, the bar , but avoid if you want some sleep . remember, be aware of the ignorant unprofessional lady at the reception! be ready to wait for a long time ! a long queue of people complaining when I left!

Keep your sense of humour and you'll get through the half to one hour check in process and you'll start to enjoy this quirky, totally inefficient hotel in the perfect location opposite the Temple of the Tooth. It's unapologetically rundown - but if you love heritage hotels you'll love this place. It has a nice restaurant with really lovely staff. It's the reception staff that desperately need training in how to deal with customers. We had zero explanation of why we were kept waiting for over half an hour. Very poor communication and generally inept. But again, get through the check in process and you'll be in heritage bliss - well, maybe not 'bliss' but you'll probably love the place anyway.

The hotel is desperately in need of a complete overhaul - my room was riddled with damp and mould with ineffective air conditioning. The staff are lovely and are the hotel's only saving grace.

Historic Hotel in Kandy
If you like historic hotels this is for you. In a perfect location by the lake and opposite the Temple of the Tooth. The interior takes you right back to the 19th Century with its wooden floors and antique bar. The dinning room is old fashioned with a good mix of western and Sri Lankan food. Staff are very helpful and friendly. Everything about this hotel is the opposite of a modern bland corporate hotel. Staying here is an experience.

The staff are exceptionally nice. The hotel manager in particular personally welcomed us when we arrived. The cleaning crew and bellhop were very friendly.

The location of the the property is the best. Right across from the temple of the tooth relic. Walkable to restaurants and shops. The property needs to be updated. Hot water was hit and miss. The staff need to be more attentive. Breakfast was acceptable. Definitely not worth the price.

This is a heritage hotel with lots of history and class but unfortunately it's maintenance hasn't kept up with it's reputation. The bathrooms need to be updated. It is otherwise clean and adequate for a night's stay.

Great if you enjoy cold showers, a wake up call to prayer at 4am each and every day, wifi dead spots in the hotel (but working across the road from the hotel) and constant traffic noises from 6am onwards. Legitimately good if you want to be close to the centre of town.

Great location. Room was spacious. Staff was really helpful. Asked for a non smoking room but got a room that smelled of smoke. Bathroom door didn't shut properly and the shower drained very slowly

The Hotel condition is very bad. The hotel has to renovate. it a very nice antique hotel keep the antique way and renovate this hotel. this is Gem of the Kandy the location is great. Food is not that good.

The location of the hotel is very convenient for tourists as most places that we visit are walking distance and just take a taxi to bit further down from town.

This is an interesting hotel that has stayed in the past. There is nothing wrong with this and I am quite happy to stay in this kind of property. The room we had was a good size and looked out onto the lake which was lovely. However, the road outside is incredibly busy from 6am till about 8:30 am and at the time I stayed there road works went on until 12 midnight and I was woken up constantly by heavy trucks passing. After a lot of difficult with the desk staff we managed to move rooms to a room that was quiet and overlooked the pool/garden. these rooms are small and not very well converted to accommodate a bathroom. I think that before anyone stays at the hotel they should be aware of the pitfalls. The central location and the Edwardian character of the place are charming are its selling points.

Situation in the dining room is rather tight due to the groups dining. If you come later than the groups , the choice of food will be limited. the in all of the hotel is extraordinarily friendly and helpful.

Hotel in centre of Kandy adjacent Temple of the Tooth temple. Old fashioned British empire style that needs a little refreshing. Go for room looking over swimming pool as other side noisy - Temple of the tooth chantings at 05.00, Flock of Birds at 06.00 and traffic severe for all 24 hours. Central location good for looking around town centre, Temple of the Tooth and Lake area. Room was OK - hot water, shower, AC, Fridge and clean - No mosquito bites - did the job. However can hear people in adjacent room and Ceiling fan noisy. Breakfast and dinner in main restaurant OK but Chinese restaurant food was superb, best I've had in a long time. Freshly cooked to order by Chef. Staff very friendly and helpful. Overall considering value for money I'd grade 8 out of 10.

This place in one word: shabby. the rooms are so sparcly decorated and antiquated they feel almost prison-like. the whole place is completely run down, and service is poor and slow. The only good thing about this place is the location. all in all very disappointing

Fantastic location and real old world feel to the rooms, furnishings and decor through out. Very poor quality of buffet and meals available - running out of items very quickly. Needs a lot more attention. Packed breakfast was also poor quality and limited. Also, ceilings leaking in hallway and in room with rains. Showers with very little water pressure and water only lukewarm in bathrooms.

Looks great, but needs to maintain the up-keep
A stunning historical building, this hotel has great visual value, including items of yester-year on display and fantastic photos from the 1800’s. However, our bed was broken, and the hot water was very temperamental. The location is amazing, next to the temple of the sacred tooth, mesuems and man made lake. The staff are dressed to impress, however, the service is very slow. We waited around 50 minutes for room service.

Beautiful old hotel now in a sad condition
Queens hotel was once an extremely beautiful hotel. It has however been neglected and is now in a bit of a sad state. The entry and foyer areas are beautiful however rooms need a complete redo. Bathrooms are not nice and much of the west wing has leaking roofs. This includes the restaurant and guest rooms. The location is good and the staff are quite helpful. Although it did take a lot of convincing to actually get the Lakeview balcony rooms we had booked and paid for. They had many excuses as to why we were not able to have these rooms until we eventually were given upgraded suites with views and balconies.

A rough start but they came through.
On arrival at the lobby we were super excited about our stay. The reception area was stunning and the area cannot be beaten. Then we were shown to our rooms and it’s went downhill Fromm there. We booked and paid for three rooms with a balcony and lake views. We were shown to two rooms that were tiny and looked more like a prison cell that a hotel. The third was bigger but away from the other two. We told them what we had booked and they said theses are the rooms. After some other staff arrived they said no you didn’t didnt request that even though we had our paperwork to prove it. Around 30 minuted of saying we would not accept the rooms and them telling us that all lake view room service were full they gave us and put us I need rooms that were twice as big and had lake views. A very dispointing experience and From looking at previous reviews it appears this may be a regular ploy. So stand your ground If you don’t get what you booked. After that the staff could not have been more helpful so I must congratulate them on helping us out when we had an emergency and needed to contact the Australian embassy and needed some paperwork copied etc. well done to the reception staff. All in all we enjoyed our stay after the initial problem and wouldn’t stay again.
