“Nice, friendly hotel in Istanbul (pros and cons)”
Pros : - Walking distance from Hippodrome, Blue Mosque, Ayasofia, Topkapi - Big room, good bathroom. - Big safe box in the closet - Nice bedding - Nice breakfast (included in price) - Coffee / tea pot in room with fine selection - Free bottled water (never drink tap water in Istanbul !) - Free WiFi - Great selection of amenities in bathroom (razor, toothbrush, etc.) - Flat screen TV with many channels - No traffic noise (in our room) - Smiling and courteous staff, very friendly, will do everything to help you during your stay (tours, restaurants, transfers, etc.) - Excellent price / quality ratio Cons : - Small closet, no drawers - Slow Internet - TV has only turkish channels - would need some international ones - I did not like very much the room decoration (but it is a matter of taste) - Small hotel means no pool, no fitness room (but anyway, who has time for that in Istanbul ?) For the price, we would definitely recommend it.
“Personable b&b with excellent rooms”
OK, this is not a 4 star hotel. It is more of a 'luxury' hostel. And yes, the area where it is placed is rather shabby. Not dangerous at all, it just includes steep streets one has to walk to get there. However, inside, the rooms are inpecable: they are of traditional Turkish decoration, very clean and well stocked with all comforts. The beds are comfortable, there is a fridge and the bathroom is great. The 'deluxe room' is double the size of the 'one bedroom suite', but the one bedroom suite is very good too. The only weakness of the one bedroom rooms is that they look at a wall. If I went again, I would make sure I was in the deluxe room. However, if you need 2 rooms, do not hesitate to go for the 'family suites'. They are the best rooms as they have balcony windows and are two separate rooms, so you can all sleep comfortably and have some private space when need be. Breakfast is also solid, especially compared to Istanbul hotels. The place is run by a family and it shows: personable, ready to help with taxis etc and good willed, one has the impression of a safe haven in a touristic area. Blue Mosque is 5-10 minutes walk, the tram stop is 5-10 minutes walk and the Grand Bazaar only 10' walk. If you do not care about big hotels, if you want a more personable approach and someone who will try to help you through the tourist traps of Istanbul, and if you can walk but would like to be close to the main sightseeings, this is the place to go to.
