“"Fawlty Towers" by the river...”

Our check in was smooth, and the night front desk staff was nice, if a little curt. I didn't really feel very welcome from the get go. We were given our room easy enough, they had our booking through Expedia. The hotel is nice to look at in the foyer and restaurant areas. The room however was dismal. The first thing was the musty "damp" smell that hit me as soon as I walked in the door. Second test: the bed - old, spring base, sagging in the middle and way too soft. Bummer. Anyhow at least it was only for a few nights. Next was the bathroom. A shower can make or break a stay for me. Anyhow this was the worst shower I used while in NZ. Hot water was scalding hot, but the pressure was extremely low. Cold water was like turning on a fire hose and nearly blew me out of the bath. The result was a shower that was nearly impossible to "mix" to achieve a decent warm shower. Trying to wash your hair took ages because you could only have the shower running at a trickle. The room decor was dated and small annoyances were aplenty, like for instance the wardrobe door would not stay closed. There was no safe either. At least the TV worked. The WiFi internet is supposed to give you 20mins a day free, however I usually got about 3 minutes before it kicked me out. Another frustration. Breakfast was nice - which was the hotel's saving grace. Overall this hotel was a very poor experience and I would not recommend you stay there.

City centre - There's not much else to look at!

Must see

Monteith's Brewery. TranzAlpine train from Greymouth to Christchurch - Awesome awesome awesome! The only way to travel!
