    “"Beware if you suffer from allergies/asthma"”

    I love the Palazzo Versace and was delighted to return for my second visit. However, upon entering my room I was overcome with a strong, spicy perfume which immediately made me feel sick. I suffer from migraine and certain strong scents will trigger an attack but this actually made my throat close and stung my eyes. The head of housekeeping came and removed a candle with an oil burner of Versace's "signature fragrance" from the room and opened the terrace doors for air but the problem persisted. Eventually they told me the scent is piped through the airconditioning. They offered me another room but this problem was throughout the hotel, although not nearly as prevalent in the open spaces of the restaurant and lobby. They then offered me a refund but nearby hotels were booked out. Since the weather wasn't too warm I decided to switch off the aircon in my room for my 6 day stay, which solved the problem but I doubt I could stay there again under the same circumstances, which is a shame as it is a beautiful hotel. If only they wouldn't impose this environment on every guest and simply leave the oil burner in the room to use if one wishes. Interestingly enough, this wasn't a problem in my last stay several years ago.

    Area recommendations
    I prefer the Southport area of the Gold Coast as it's quieter, has a couple of good resorts, some excellent restaurants at the marina and nice shops in the Marina Mirage shopping centre. It is also right on Main Beach. And there are theme parks nearby for families to visit.
    When to go
    It can be hot, humid and rainy in the summer months but having just been in December is was fairly cool and cloudy, so I'd take my chances at any time of year.
    Getting there
    From Melbourne Virgin and Jet Star fly into the Gold Coast airport. From there one can take a bus, taxi or a private car booked through the hotel.
    Getting around
    Probably best to rent a car but there are taxis and buses.
    What to pack
    Resort and beach wear, something nice for the evening, a jacket or sweater in case it's cool.
    Must see
    Palazzo Versace is a lovely place to have a drink before dinner and if you are a guest, the pool area is lovely. Theme parks, Sea World etc for those who are interested.
    Shopping
    Marina Mirage has nice shops.
    Dining
    Some great restaurants right on the marina from seafood to casual Italian.
    Family-friendly activities
    The beach and theme parks.
    Nightlife
    Surfers, I guess, but we didn't go to clubs.
    Events and shows
    Saw a great comedy show at The State Theatre. Arj Barker was performing.

    Main Beach.

    “Quite good”

    Fantastic hotel. Stayed there for 3 days after our wedding to unwind before our Honeymoon. Pros: - Dining was phenomenal (make sure you try the buffet) - Service was fantastic (as would be expected) - Room was great (plus in room spa) - The mattress was VERY comfortable Cons (minor): - Only in-room movie options were either complimentary Foxtel channels or to borrow a DVD from the front desk. - Atmosphere is more like a museum than a hotel. I didn't feel relaxed when walking through the hotel. To be fair, we were there mid week so it was very quiet, which could account for that feeling. - Complimentary water in the room had an 'unusual' aftertaste, regardless whether it was chilled or at room temperature. I would definitely recommend the hotel to other people although for my next Gold Coast holiday I will likely stay somewhere that I would feel more comfortable walking around in a singlet, shorts and thongs (holiday attire). That's nothing against the hotel, it is what it is.

    “Stunning”

    My friend and I had a wonderful stay here. The staff are fantastic, the rooms are beautiful... everything is just perfect. Highly recommend Vanitas, food was superb. Its so nice you wont want to ever leave!

    “Australian Best Hotel”

    The hotel lobby is vey impressive, it is always clean and tidy, fresh flowers every day. Our suite is large and comfortably, with a good view but a bit noisy due to road traffic. The room is serviced twice a day by excellent housekeeping staff. The swimming pool is big and long with good surrounding, our four years old granddaughter really love it. The breakfast is good. The quality of the buffet dinner is below average for the price. However the dinner from the room service is much better.

    “AMAZING!”

    - Dinner at Versace’s fine dining restaurant, Vanitas was superb. The food was obviously great but it was the staff that impressed me the most - Sipping mango cocktails by the swimming pool was great fun. Who would have thought we would be sipping cocktails by the pool in our bathers in June – what a great surprise! - Breakfast at Il Barrocco was a great way to start each day – real coffee at a buffet was a treat and I loved that the chef remembered by omelette order on the second morning. - Cruising in the hotel’s Audi A8 to spend the afternoon at Sea World was quite a treat. - Shopping at Marina Mirage was fun too – I had to buy a swimming costume and shorts as I didn’t bring any with me. Again, who knew it would be so warm in the middle of winter! - The pillows, the pillows, I must mention the pillows! They were so amazingly good – luxuriously soft like sleeping on a cloud but still with support. - Scootering around the Gold Coast on the Palazzo Versace’s black Vespa’s was such an experience that I now want my own scooter at home! Definitely worth the $$$.

    “extremely impressed with the service”

    My husband and I stayed at the hotel and were made to feel really special. The service was excellent. We tried the seafood buffet and it was beautiful. Our room was very comfortable and overlooked the Marina. Shopping in the boutique was an awesome experience and, I would recommend it to anyone.

    “Looking Forward To Returning”

    Selecting a location for mini break around Australia was difficult with so many wonderful places to stay however I could not be happier with my decision in staying at Palazzo Versace for four days. From arrival to departure I found all staff friendly, helpful and pleasant to deal with. My room was a standard Superior King and I found it to be huge! Overlooking the pool area. I felt very spoilt. Buffet Breakfast was delicious however I did feel it over was slightly overpriced and lacked choice on consecutive days. Location wise I enjoyed staying out of town from the main tourist area. I would definately come back to Palazzo Versace and I can't wait to return.

    The fish and chip shop next door sells delicious fresh seasfood sourced directly from the trawlers locally. Beware of the queues and long waits - have faith it's worth it!
