The northern gateway to the Thuringian forest, Eisenach is famous for its UNESCO-listed Wartburg Castle and as the home of Johann Sebastian Bach, whose birth house is now a museum. The house of Martin Luther, who lived here as a child and adult, is also a museum. The old town has numerous historical sights, including the 18th-century town palace, the city hall, and the Marktplatz. Hainich National Park is 10 kilometres away.
