Bring family or friends to this picturesque parkland, where play areas, lakes and a musical bandstand sit in the shadow of the impressive Colchester Castle.

Spend a peaceful afternoon enjoying a picnic on the expansive lawns of Colchester Castle Park. As the sun warms the park's green open spaces, capture views of the River Colne and the imposing silhouette of  Colchester Castle. This landmark's name was the inspiration for the park's. Feel the historic significance of this site, preserved by an ancient Roman wall that divides the Upper and Lower areas. Take a stroll through Victorian gardens, let the kids play ball games or attend one of many special events held here throughout the year.

Colchester Castle Park is located at the centre of town, making it a popular stop off for locals. Its central Roman wall, which has been carbon dated, suggests that this area has seen human activity for over two millennia. Join some of over a million visitors who come to explore this 11-hectare (24-acre) commons each year.

Take a loved one through the park's gardens and admire the award-winning horticultural displays. Watch players concentrating on the bowling green and spot sun glinting off the scales of the park's pond fish. On a sunny day, visit the bandstand, where free musical performances are often held to entertain passerbys. Whether accompanied by music or not, the bandstand benches offer splendid views of the park.

Walk to the Upper Park and play a round of minigolf with your kids or friends. The nearby play area has plenty of fun installations and a bouncy castle to keep young children entertained. Sports enthusiasts can watch cricket in the Lower Park.

Refresh yourself with a tea at the café and then walk to the lake. Rent a pedalo and spend a glorious afternoon on the water.

Colchester Castle Park hosts a number of cultural events, including concerts, fairs and performances, throughout the year. Find out what's on at the Colchester Information Centre. The park is open daily, though access is prohibited at night.
