Located on the River Main, Aschaffenburg is known as the Gateway to the Spessart, a low-elevation mountain range. The citys chief landmark is the 17th-century Johannisburg Palace. The palace gardens contain the Pompejanum, a reconstructed Roman villa commissioned by King Ludwig I. A riverside bike path between Aschaffenburg and Bamberg winds along vineyards, forests, and picturesque villages.
