Founded by winegrowers in the 13th century, Jena is home to world's oldest planetarium and famous for Carl Zeiss and the development of lenses, documented at the Optical Museum. Sights in the old town include the town hall with its astronomical clock, gothic St Michael's church, the towers of the medieval fortifications, and Schiller's summer house. The three Dornburg Castles and the moated Kapellendorf Castle are 15 kilometres away.
