Set in the desert 55 kilometres east of Granada, Guadix is best known for its cave houses in the Troglodyte neighborhood where roughly half the towns population lives. These houses, built in caverns carved into the sides of hills, are mostly modern dwellings; area residents, however, have been living underground as a strategy for avoiding the summer heat since Moorish times.
